SAFETY DATA SHEET

WET-SEAL or CON-AGUA
Material Safety Data Sheets are provided to assist the user in compliance with The Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and associated regulations.  This data is valid for the following Cement: DATA Chemical Family: Inorganic Calcium Compounds Formula for WET-SEAL(CON AGUA) which contains finely ground Portland, clinker mixed with about 5% of calcium sulphate (gypsum) and small amounts of up to 5% calcium carbonate (limestone).  Rapid cement consists of extra finely ground Portland clinker and about 5% calcium sulphate. Portland cement clinker is a sintered material produced by heating to high temperature (greater than 1200°C), a mixture of raw materials such as lime-stone and shale from the earth’s crust.  The compounds formed are mainly hydraulic calcium silicates contained in crystalline mass, not readily separable into the individual components.

WET-SEAL Formula: “WET- SEAL’’ Portland blast furnace cement consists of Portland clinker (see Earlier description), granulated blast furnace slag and a small amount of calcium sulphate interground into a fine homogenous powder.  The granulated blast furnace slag is a by-product of iron making.  It is formed when limestone added to the charge of iron ore dissociates at high temperature and the resulting reactive calcium oxide combines with alumina and silica from the iron ore in a melt phase (1500°C). Due to lower density it separates and floats on the molten iron.  The furnace is tapped periodically with the slag melt being directed to a high-pressure spray of water.  It is rapidly quenched to a glass or cryptocrystalline calcium aluminum silicate in the form of light colored porous sand sized grains (granulate). When it is finely ground it can be chemically activated to react with water in a similar manner to Portland cement.  The nominal composition of the inter-ground product is 75% blast furnace slag: 25% Portland Clinker.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA
WET SEAL and CON AGUA are non-combustible and non-explosive.  They are compatible with most other building materials. They will not decompose into other hazardous by-products and do not  polymerize.

HEALTH HAZARD DATA
WES Threshold Limit Value is 10mg/m3 Acute: Wet cement, especially as an ingredient in plastic (unhardened) concrete, mortar or slurries, can dry the skin and cause caustic burns.
This can cause eye irritation. Inhalation can irritate the upper respiratory system.

Chronic:Cement dust can cause inflammation of the lining tissue of the interior of the nose and inflammation of the cornea.  Hypersensitive individuals may develop an allergic dermatitis. (Cement may contain trace [less than 0.05%] amounts of chromium salts or compounds including hexavalent chromium, or other metals found to be hazardous or toxic in some chemical form.  These metals are mostly present as trace sub-situations within the principal minerals).

Emergency and First Aid Procedures:Pour clean water into eyes for at least 15 minutes and seek prompt medical attention; wash exposed skin areas with soap and plenty of water and remove contaminated clothing. If large areas are affected seek medical attention; if ill effects due to inhalation, move person to fresh air. Keep warm, quiet, and seek medical attention.

SPILL PROCEDURES
Steps to be taken in case material is spilled: Use dry cleanup methods that do not disperse dust into the air.  Avoid inhalation of dust and contact with skin. Emergency procedures are not required.

DISPOSAL METHOD:
Small amounts of material can be disposed of as common waste or returned to the container for later use if it is not contaminated.  Large amounts may require special handling.  Material should be kept out of storm water and sewer drains. Any discharge during cleanup should comply with Resource Consent requirements and any relevant District or Regional Council rules.

STORAGE AND HANDLING
The material should be kept free from moisture until used.  Normal temperatures and pressures do not affect the material. Promptly remove dusty clothing or clothing which is wet with cement fluids and launder before use. Wash thoroughly after exposure to dust or wet cement mixtures or fluids.

SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory protection:
In dusty environments, the use of an approved disposable respirator (not a nuisance dust mask) is recommended.

Ventilation:An exhaust fan deducted from near point of generation can be used to control airborne dust levels. Dust levels and any other discharge of dust should comply with Occupational Safety and Health rules, Resource Consents and any relevant District or Regional rules.

Eye Protection: Use tight fitting goggles or protective eyewear in dusty environments.

Skin Protection:Use barrier creams, impervious, abrasion and alkali resistant gloves, boots and
protective clothing to protect the skin from prolonged contact with wet cement in plastic concrete, mortar, or slurries. Immediately after working with cement or cement-containing materials, workers should shower with soap and water. Precautions must be taken. Cement burns with little warning – little heat is sensed.
